Why oh why is it so hard to get a decent iced coffee?
Establishments seem unable to determine even exactly what an iced coffee is. Even in Italy I was served everything from an espresso flavoured sundae, to a proper glass of cold coffee served with ice and sugar. In my native South Africa you usually get a coffee milkshake or that abomination called a freezochino. Iced coffee with milk is just plain wrong. If I wanted a milkshake I would have asked for one!

In Rome I was served a delicious and perfect iced coffee. It was a glass of chilled coffee (made properly with cold water, not merely a hot coffee placed in the fridge), ice cubes and a bit of sugar to taste. Bliss.

This is how iced coffee is meant to be enjoyed.
I have decided that my only hope of getting a decent iced coffee is to make it myself. Perhaps a plan for this weekend? The weather certainly warrants it!
I will let you know how it goes.
I think you’ll enjoy it more for having made it yourself. 🙂 I always feel that way about Irish Coffee, which I now have a terrible urge for…

What on earth is a freezochino?? Sounds…. intriguing. I’m on my way to Africa in a few months so I better know what I’m in for 😛
I know what you mean though… I’ve lived in Italy for four years, and I’m ashamed to say I miss the calorie-laden creamy iced coffees from Australia the most!

Hey, where in Africa are you headed? A freezochino is basically a frozen cappuccino topped with cream… It has its place, but it is not the quintessential iced coffee. Just saying.

Fair call! Sounds both delicious and possibly diabetes-inducing.
I’m off to Ethiopia…. possibly the best country for coffee! So my hopes are high
