Former top South African newspaper columnist Jani Allan

I was wondering what you all thought of the first bit of this article:

http://themediaonline.co.za/2015/04/confidentially-the-story-of-jani/

Why bring up that her friend is a crossdresser? Does this add anything to the story, or is it just used to try and generate a bit if salaciousness and publicity?

I have mixed feelings on the one hand some publicity is good but on the other this just smacks of sensationalism to me.

Your thoughts?

  1. I don’t know anything about the person quoted … but it seems like it’s just a way for her to burnish some “colorful” credentials. And it’s slightly offensive. It’s like saying “my friend, who is black” when the friend’s blackness has nothing to do with the story at hand. It’s the difference between thinking of people as humans, and using them as window dressing in the movie version of your life.

  2. I have to agree with you. This is thrown into the mix for effect and nothing more. You are correct it is not related to the story in any way. If there were to be a positive to this it is that by casually dropping this info into the article it does sort of say “They crossdress. So what. That is normal is it not” As for being offensive. I don’t think so. We can be a little quick to take offence.

    Just simply un necessary.
